W.S. CHANDLER was born in Pickaway County, Ohio, March 5, l84l, and died at Clarinda, Iowa, March l5, l922, lacking only ll days of being 8l years of age.

He came to Decatur County with his parents in l855. When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in l862 as a member of the 2nd Massachusetts Cavalry. On February l8, l866, he was united in marriage to MRS. HANNAH FIELD HAWKINS, and to this union six children were born, four sons and two daughters, all of the children except one son and one daughter having preceded him to the great beyond. He is survived by his aged widow and daughter, MRS. BLANCH KOHAL, of Leon, and one son, MILLARD CHANDLER, of California, and other relatives.

For many years, MR. CHANDLER resided on a farm near Leon, then moved to Leon where he was loved and respected by a large number of friends. During the gold rush to Alaska, MR. CHANDLER made the trip, passing through many hardships in which much younger men gave up.

In l9l0 he united with the Brethren Church and he and his good wife donated the ground on which Crown Chapel now stands.

Funeral services were held at the Leon Brethren Church, conducted by the Leon Masonic Lodge, of which he had been a member for many years. Interment in Hamilton Cemetery.
