Subj: DEATH OF HAZEL PICKERING.
Date: 4/22/2001

July l2, l894

HAZEL, the little three-year-old daughter of MR. and MRS. MART PICKERING,
died of her injuries last Thursday afternoon at 3 o'clock. The accident
occurred about 9:30 o'clock in the morning.

The three little children were alone in the house, the eldest being but five
years of age. MRS. PICKERING had gone up town on an errand for a short time.
It is supposed the children were playing with matches and little HAZEL's
clothing was soon enveloped in flames. Her screams attracted the attention
of MRS. LEANDER POWELL, a neighbor, who was severely burned in attempting to
extinguish the flames. DRS. BOWMAN and GARDNER were called and rendered all
the medical aid possible, but
without avail and at 3 o'clock, death came to the relief of the little
sufferer.

The funeral services were conducted by REV. HUGHES at the house the following
day at 2 o'clock p.m. The parents have the sympathy of all their friends and
neighbors.

History of the Leon Cemetery
The oldest know cemetery of Leon was located about one mile east of Leon on
Highway #2. The old road went straight east instead of curving north, and
this cemetery was on the south side of the road. There were reported about 20
graves there.

Later a Leon Cemetery was established in it's present location (Center
Township. Section 29) and burials were made in the section to the east of the
main gate. (This section is now known as "Original Cemetery." Some donations
were given to the city to remove the bodies from the bodies from the old
original cemetery east of Leon and for their interment in the Leon Cemetery.
Supposedly they were buried just west of the main gate. Probably the whole
original Leon Cemetery was Original Section and the east one-half of Section
D.

Much of the information in this history is from the "History of Leon Cemetery
Association" written by Edgar H. Epperly, President, in 1974. In 1912 the
Leon Cemetery Association was organized for one purpose only, to assist the
city in the beautification and upkeep of the cemetery.

An iron fence and two iron gate entrances were built about 1912. This was
done to keep the cemetery from being used as a pasture for livestock. Back in
the horse and buggy days there were very few cars and livestock was not in
danger of being hit by cars, so they were turned loose to forage for
themselves, and often entered the cemetery for grazing. In 1914 the
association "destroyed gopher mounds and skunk dens."

Abigail Burnison was born in Marion Co., Ohio Feb. 8, 1844 and departed
this earthly pilgrimage at her home in Leon, Iowa on Oct. 17, 1936, at the
age of 92 years, 8 months and 9 days.

On May 16, 1863 she was united in marriage to Jermiah Pickering at Lima,
Ohio. In 1865 Mr. and Mrs. Pickering moved to Decatur County, Iowa where she
continually resided. On Feb. 24, 1924 Mr. Pickering passed away. Mr. and Mrs.
Pickering were the parents of ten children. Five still survive their mother,
three sons and two daughters. Leander Pickering, Frank Pickering and Clyde
Pickering all of Leon Iowa. And Mrs. Hail Coates of Merina, Colorado and Mrs.
Harry Craggo of Leon. There are 27 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren
and eight great-great grandchildren making up 5 generations in this family.

Mrs. Pickering was a member of the Christain Adventist church for many
years. She loved her church, her bible and her lord.

Grandma Pickering as she called by her many Freind was a most remarkable
women for her age. She loved to tell the events of her early life, but she
till was alert in mind to the present.

Blessed are the dead who die in the lord from henceforth; yea said the
spirt, that they may rest from their labor, for their work do follow them.

Funeral services were held from the Stewart Funeral Home Tuesday
afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. S. C. Henderson of the Brethren
Church. Interment was in the Leon cemetery.

Card of thanks . We wish to express our appreciation and deepest thanks
to those who were so kind to us at the death of our mother. We also wish to
thank you for the beautiful floral offerings. The Children.

Still looking over what you sent - I've seen most of it but there's the odd
paragraph here and there that seems new to me, so I'm trying to be very
thorough.

Meanwhile, I should answer your question about the Jeremiah line. Not
specifically, but there was an Abel among the family that founded the town of
Pickerington in Fairfield County (Violet Twp, I believe), OH. Can't tell
from this if it's the same guy, but it could well be. I haven't kept that
stuff because I find no connection, but I believe Abel's father's name was
Levi, and that Levi's father was Samuel. Samuel was born in VA but moved to
Greene County, TN (actually, then NC) as a boy.

If this is that line, these folks were Quaker - there's a lot of good
information on them in the usual Quaker sources.

History: Palestine Cemetery adjoined the Palestine Baptist Church. The
church was built by lumber donated by several families with sawmills. The
church was torn down in 1950, but the foundation, 30' X 305', is still
visible. There is a plot record showing who purchased lots, but the plot
does not show burials. There are many graves in the cemetery that are not
marked.

Martin B Pickering (born 22 October 1865, died of acute alcohol poisoning
31 March 1911 in Leon Iowa), married Ethel Isabel Schenck 20 May 1888 in
Leon. Ethel (b 13 April 1870 d 18 Nov 1955 in Leon) was the daughter of
Tilghman H Schenck and Matilda A Shelton. Ethel had 6 brothers and sisters
but only one besides herself lived past young adulthood. The rest died
within a few years of each other of tuberculosis. Mathilda Shelton was the
youngest daughter of John T Shelton by his first wife Isabel Rowan. Isabel
died when Mathilda was only a few years old and she was raised by Jane
Flower, John T's second wife. I have a ton of info on the Decatur county
Sheltons if anyone is interested.
