Decatur County Journal

The C.C. BECK Livery Barn at Decatur was
destroyed by fire at an early
hour Thursday morning of last week. The
building was entirely destroyed
together with two buggies, an automobile,
several sets of harness, a
small quantity of feed and other property.
The horses had been turned
out into a nearby pasture the night before
and consequently the animals
escaped death in the flames.

The fire was discovered at 2:30 o'clock by
ARCHIE HAVENS, formerly of
Leon, who resides just a short distance from
the barn. He quickly
sounded an alarm and the people of the town
responded quickly. Bucket
brigades were at once organized and everybody
went to work. The inside
of the barn was a roaring mass of flames when
MR. HAVENS discovered the
fire. The fire fighters, realizing that
nothing could be done to save
the barn, turned their attention to the
residence of MR. BECK, just east
of the barn, and to other buildings near.
The BECK home was on fire a
number of times but the building was saved by
hard work.

MR. BECK has been in Dakota for some weeks on
business. MRS. BECK was
at home and their son-in-law, ROY TENNEY, was
in charge of the Livery
Business. He stated that no one had been
about the premises during the
evening. The origin of the fire is unknown.
The loss is partially
covered by insurance. The barn was insured
for $l,000 and the $l,500
automobile for $750. We understand that the
property destroyed was
estimated at $5,500.
