On Monday, the plans and specifications
prepared by JACOB HAWK for the
new Hotel Leon on the north side of the
square, were accepted by the
building committee of the hotel company, and
the contract for the
carpenter work was let to MR. HAWK. The
selection of his plans in
competition with the best architects of the
country is quite a
compliment to his ability and skill as an
architect. He now has the
contract for the new hotel, GARDNER's two
rooms and HORNER and BIGGS'
two story brick block.

We were kindly permitted by MR. HAWK to
inspect the plans, and they
certainly look well on the paper. The hotel
will be 66x80 feet, facing
south, and contains in addition to the
office, wash room, dining room,
2lx32 kitchen, 2lxl8 on the ground floor, a
ladies parlor l7xl8 l/2, a
library 20 l/2xl5, and the bridal chamber
llxl6, and 23 guests' chambers
on the second floor. On the second floor is
a court l3x26, and toilet
and bathrooms. In the basement is the sample
room, laundry and wash
rooms.

A beautiful balcony opening from the ladies'
parlor will extend along
the south side of the building, and an Oriel
hanging window will grace
the southwest corner of the building. In the
rear will be a balcony and
fire escape.

A cistern with a capacity of 700 barrels will
be dug in the rear of the
hotel to furnish the water supply to the
building which is to be
equipped with hot and cold water throughout.
It will be heated by
steam.

An open oak stairway and elevator in the
office will afford easy access
to the rooms above.

It promises to be one of the finest
hostelries in southern Iowa.
