The preliminary trial of J.E. CLARK for the
shooting of TOM WICKS, was
held at Van Wert Monday. After the state had
in all their evidence the
defendant waived examination and his bond was
reduced from $l,200 to
$l,000 which he promptly gave and was
released.

The clerks and merchants of this city are
agitating the matter of
closing the stores during the summer season
at seven o'clock in the
evening. We believe that no great amount of
inconvenience would be
occasioned by such a movement, and the
merchants and clerks are
certainly entitled to a few hours' rest and
recreation.

Every woman has the most faithful husband;
the most intelligent
children; the greatest bother with servants;
the best recipe for making
an apple cake, and the knowledge where to get
the greatest bargains; but
she never has a dress to put on, if you
listen to her when she talks to
her husband.

JOHN SITES, an inmate of the poor farm, died
on Tuesday morning of last
week and was buried on Wednesday. We are
informed that a relative of
MR. SITES, of Lamoni, brought him to the poor
farm and claimed that he
lived in this county, but it seems that he is
from Harrison County, Mo.,
and the authorities of this county are
looking into the matter to see if
Decatur County is not entitled to the
expenses from Harrison County.

Yesterday morning about nine o'clock the cry
of fire brought out the
citizens in good shape. It proved to be the
building of J.A. Harris &
Co's marble works. The fire must have
started by a spark from the flue
which set the dry shingles on fire. The fire
company showed itself to
be in readiness in case of fire for in less
than five minutes they were
at the cistern, at the northwest corner of
the square, but they were not
needed as a couple of buckets of water
extinguished the flames.

In their new room, first door south of
Farquhar Bros., Craigo & Co. are
located and they wish to inform the people of
Leon and Decatur County
that they are now ready to meet the demands
of the hungry predestrians.
They have received a fine new line of fresh
candies and nuts, also
handle the celebrated Nichlos, Juhan, Papoose
and Sultana cigars, and
are ready to deliver ice cream and all kinds
of ices to any part of the
city on short notice. Call and see them.

FRANK GARDNER is having the house and barn on
the place known as the old
HASKETT property in south Leon torn down and
as soon as he gets the
rubbish cleared away, will begin the erection
of a new dwelling.

MRS. A.M. BLAIR, a widow lady living in the
northeast part of this city,
died very suddenly yesterday morning about
eight o'clock of heart
failure. She had been suffering for some
time with la grippe. The
funeral will be held tomorrow.

At the meeting of the school board Monday
evening, S.C. PENNIWELL was
chosen as President. MR. PENNIWELL has
proven himself to be a good
member of the board, always ready and willing
to help our schools along
to the best advantage.

We are pleased to learn that DR. W.T. KELLEY
has again returned to this
city and will in the future be one of the
leading physicians and
surgeons. The Dr. left here in l886 and
since that time has been used
well by the world, both physically and
financially. The REPORTER wishes
him unbounded success.

The following marriage licenses have been
issued the past week:

JOHN P. MCDOUGAL, 49 to MARY P. SOMES, 30.
UNO D. NOFTSGER, 22 to SARAH A. BEDELL, 20.
JOHN F. SMITH, 22 to MARTHA A. TROPPEL, l8.

The band concert which was published last
week to be given at the opera
house Friday, has been postponed on account
of some of the members being
out of the city, and we are informed that it
will be held on Friday,
Marcy 29. We hope that everybody will watch
for the date and turn out
and give the boys a crowded house.

On last Saturday morning, DR. H.B. MCKLVEEN
removed from the ear of MR.
JACOB KREY, a bug five-eighths of an inch in
length, commonly called a
snapping bug. It got into his head in l875
while he was still a
resident of Germany. It seems a wonder that
the ear could contain a
foreign body of such great size. -- Coin
Gazette.

The home of MRS. M. NOBLE was the scene
Wednesday afternoon of an event
which will carry joy to at least two brave
hearts. A few friends were
present to witness the marriage of CALEB
BEDELL, of Bloomington
Township, to MISS NANCY LLOYD of Decatur
Township, Rev. D. Fye tying the
connubial knot. May joy and peace be their
lot. --Davis City Rustler.
