The Street and Campbell Families

Edith Campbell and Ernest Street were married in the Campbell farm home south
of the town of Grand River on August 9, 1910. Edith was the only daughter
and the oldest of three children born to William H. and Minnie Fear Campbell,
who were married in Grand River in 1888. Ernest was the youngest of eleven
children born to Peter and Alice Weston Street who were married in England in
1869. Peter came to American in 1871, and Alice and two children followed
him a year later. They arrived in southern Iowa in 1882 after living several
years in Delaware County in Iowa.

Minnie Fear Campbell died in 1918 at the age of 55, but her husband William
lived past his 100th birthday in 1961.

Peter and Alice Street moved to South Dakota when Ernest married. He took
his bride to the Peter Street farm home southeast of town in Grand River
Township. It was in this home that their only child Phyllis, was born in
1916.

In 1912, Peter and Alice Street returned to live in Grand River. They lived
to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in 1929. Their youngest child,
Ernest, had died earlier that year at the age of 38.

Edith Street, a young widow, worked and helped Phyllis, a 1933 graduate of
Grand River High School, obtain her B.S. in Home Economics Education from
Iowa State University inn 1937. Then at the age of 47, Edith, a 1908
graduate of Grand River High School, began her college education. After
earning her teaching certificate at UNI in Cedar Falls, she taught one year
at Beech, Iowa. She returned to Grand River and taught fifth grade until she
resigned to make a home for her aging father. They lived in the house at the
corner of Broadway and Fourth, which was across the street south of the
school.
