HORACE KEARNEY, the daring aviator who was killed a few days ago in an
attempt to fly out over the Pacific near Los Angeles, California, was a
personal friend and a former student of J.F. SMITH, of the Leon Electric
Company. During the time that Mr. SMITH was in the navy Mr. KEARNEY was a
student under his instruction. Mr. SMITH said he was always a daring fellow
and since he had taken upon the life of a bird man he had developed into one
of the most daring of all aviators. He attempted a long flight over the
Pacific accompanied by a newspaper reporter by the name of LAWRENCE. Their
aeroplane was wrecked, and they were thrown into the sea and drowned.
