The William M. Jones Family

William M. Jones was born in a log cabin Sept. 18, 1889 in Doyle Twp., Clarke Co., Ia. He was the son of Umphrey and Elizabeth Parry Jones. His parents, natives of Montgomeryshire, No. Wales, came to America in 1881. They had nine children: John, Anne, Mary, Thomas, Elizabeth, William, David, Bertha and Frank.

William married March 10, 1915, to Golda Gladys Carrel, daughter of James and Laura Clark Carrel. In 1920, he bought the family farm, where he raised Hereford cattle. Five children were born to them: Eugene (1916), Dale (1918), Iris (1921), Bette (1924) and James (1927).

Goldie died Sept. 19, 1938, leaving Willie to raise his family alone. He died July 1, 1976. Both are buried at Westerville Cemetery.

Eugene, a grad. of the 1933 class at Grand River, married Lilith Wald, in 1943. He joined the U.S. Air Corps, taking basic training at Harlingen, Tex. and was sent to the European Theatre. As a Waist Gunner on a B-17 Flying Fortress. He was killed in action over the North Sea in 1943, when his plane was shot down.

Dale, a graduate of the 1936 class at Grand River; attended Simpson College; taught country school one year; attended Kansas State College at Manhattan for 2 1/2 years prior to enlisting in the U.S. Air Corps, graduated from Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, San Antonio, Tex., where he was commissioned a pilot and flew 6 years for the Air Corps before and during WW II. In 1945 he married Dorothy Hunt. They had four children: Cynthia, Gary, Maria and Robert. They own a 320 acre farm in Doyle Twp., Clarke Co., Ia.

Iris, a grad. of Van Wert High School, attended Simpson College, taught school at Westerville and Hopeville, IA., Prior to moving to the west coast. She married in 1944 to Ernest Jimmerson; and they have 6 children: Richard, Robert, Barbara, (twins) Daniel and David and Pamela. They live at Pittsburg, Calif.

Alice (Bette), a 1942 graduate of Van Wert, attended University of Iowa and Southwestern College at Winfield, Kansas, with a B.A. Degree. She taught school at Douglas, Kansas, prior to her marriage to Alfred Ogbourne in 1947. They have four children: Patrick, William, Michael and Mary. They live in Osceola, Ia.

James, a 1947 grad. of Murray High School, joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1952, taking basic training in San Diego, Calif., was sent to Ft. Benning, Ga., where he trained in Auto. Mech. School. He married Marie James in 1954; and they have four children: Frank, Fay, Mitchell and Jeanne. They own a 440 acre farm in Doyle Twp., Clarke Co., Ia.
