Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 640:
"W. J. SULLIVAN, postmaster at Leon, received his appointment from President Arthur, February 26, 1884. Mr. Sullivan served in the army during the war of the Rebellion. He enlisted March 5, 1863, in the Third Iowa Cavalry, and continued in active service until July 4, 1864, when he was severely wounded by a cannon ball, losing his left arm. Mr. Sullivan was born in Clay County, Illinois, June 15, 1847, being but seventeen years of age when he entered the army. He came to Decatur County with his father's family in 1859, settling in Pleasant Township. In 1876 the father returned to Illinois, where he still resides. Our subject served as county recorder eight years, beginning in 1869; was deputy treasurer in 1878; and from January, 1880, to January, 1884, was county auditor. He was a gallant soldier, and has proved a competent and faithful official. Mrs. Sullivan was formerly Miss Hattie Linsey, a daughter of Samuel Linsey, now a resident of Kansas. They have one son, Charles E., born in Leon, in 1873."
