Biography ~ George Spaeth

Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa,
(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 581:

"GEORGE SPAETH, farmer, resides in Garden Grove. He owns 190 acres of land in High Point Township, besides the house and lot where he resides. He was born in France, in 1831, and was a son of Joseph and Catherine Spaeth. He was reared to the vocation of a farmer, which he has successfully followed through life. He came to Decatur County in 1856, and was married in Garden Grove in 1861, to Margaret Collaen, born in Baden, Germany, in 1836, daughter of George and Mary A. (Bearer) Collaen. They have two children -- Lucy, wife of Lewis Chase, of High Point Township, has two children, Helen and Ralph; and Alfred, a resident of Montana. Mr. Spaeth is a self-made man. He started in life without a dollar, but by hard labor and economical habits has acquired a sufficient amount to keep the wolf from his door in old age."
