Biographical and Historical Record of Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa, (Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 547:

"J. W. HARTMAN, merchant, Woodland, Iowa, is a native of Highland County, Ohio, born September 27, 1848, a son of Nelson and Arbelia Hartman, natives of Virginia. Our subject's early life was spent in Rainsboro, where he was educated, and at an early age began to learn the carpenter's trade, at which he worked several years. In October, 1871, he came to Iowa and located on a farm in Woodland Township, Decatur County, where he lived until January, 1885, engaged in working at his trade, in connection with farming. January 9, 1885, he, in company with William Curry, bought the stock of G. A. Graham, a merchant, of Woodland, and formed the firm of Hartman & Curry. March 1, 1885, Mr. Hartman bought Mr. Curry's interest, and has since continued the business alone. He carries a complete stock of dry-goods, boots, and shoes, staple and fancy groceries, hardware, queensware, etc., and by his fair dealing and moderate prices has won the confidence and esteem of all who have had any dealings with him. Mr. Hartman was married December 28, 1876, to Mary J. Swan, of Decatur County, daughter of Frederick Swan, a prominent pioneer of Woodland Township. They have two children -- Gertrude and Talbot.
