BIOGRAPHY ~ David William Hopkins
Graceland University, Lamoni, IowaDavid William Hopkins was born in Troy, Kansas, on October 31, 1897. The Hopkins family moved to Saint Joseph, Missouri in 1899. There, Mr. Hopkins attended public schools.
Mr. Hopkins attended Graceland and graduated in 1916. During World War I, Mr. Hopkins served as a sergeant in Company F, Student Training Corps from October 1918 until his honorable discharge in December of 1918.
Mr. Hopkins continued his studies, graduating from Iowa State University, Iowa City, in 1920, and the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1926.
Mr. Hopkins taught public speaking at Graceland from during the 1920-21 school year, then returned to Saint Joseph, Missouri, where he taught in the high schools. In 1928, he was elected to Congress in 1928, serving as a member of Missouri's 4th Congressional district until he was defeated in the 1932 election.
Mr. Hopkins also served as the superintendent of schools in Saint Joseph in 1928 and 1929, and on the Saint Joseph Board of Education from 1927 to 1967.
After his congressional defeat, Mr. Hopkins returned to private life as an insurance broker.
Mr. Hopkins died on October 14, 1968 in Saint Joseph, Missouri. Interment was made in Memorial Park.
