(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), Pp. 677-78:GEORGE WOODBURY, druggist at Garden Grove, was born July 23, 1832, in Tompkins County, New York. His parents, JAMES H. and SUSAN WOODBURY , were natives of Worcester County, Massachusetts. His father was a farmer by occupation. In 1854 the famiy removed to Decatur County, settling in Garden Grove, where the mother died in 1878, aged seventy-five years, and the father in 1885, at the advanced age of eighty-four years. Mr. and Mrs. WOODBURY were highly esteemed pioneers of Decatur County. They were the parents of five children, three of whom are still living - ELIZABETH L., wife of J. L. YOUNG, an attorney at Leon; JAMES A., attorney at Osceola, Iowa, and the subject of this sketch. GEORGE was educated in the common schools, attending school in winter and assisted his father during the summer. In 1849 he established a drug-store in Adair, Michigan. In 1854 he commenced selling dry-goods, and in 1856 he removed to Leon, Decatur County. In 1861 he was elected sheriff of the county, and proved one of the ablest officials in the discharge of his duties known in the records of the county. He was re-elected in 1865. He was married October 4, 1858, at White Pigeon, Michigan, to KATE M. JACOBUS, born in Cooperstown, New York, in 1834 [daughter of Thomas and Jane (McKinney) Jacobus]. They have one child - GEORGE J., cashier of Garden Grove Bank, which carries $50,000 worth of stock. Mr. WOODBURY is a member of the Masonic order, and belongs to Grand River Lodge, No. 78, at Leon; he is also a member of the Presbyterian church. He owns a dwelling house and lot, also a brick building, in which he has a large and well-selected stock of drugs, medicines, paints, oils, brushes, and other articles usually found in a first-class drug store. Mr. WOODBURY is a man of ability, clear judgment, and is highly esteemed as a citizen.
NOTE: George Woodbury Sr.'s father, James Harvey Woodbury was born May 24, 1801, Chariton MS, the son of Caleb and Silence (King) Woodbury, and died February 15 1885, Garden Grove IA. George's mother, Susannah (Woodbury) Woodbury, was born January 3, 1803, Sutton MS, the daughter of Daniel and Sarah "Sally" (Childs) Woodbury, and died May 12, 1878. Daniel and Susannah were cousins.
George Woodbury Sr. died March 14, 1904, Leon IA. Catharine "Kate" Mary (Jacobus) Woodbury died some time befor 1900, her gravestone is difficult to read. George Woodbury Jr. was born September 25, 1855, and died June 21, 1890; his wife, Ada E. Woodbury, was born March 6, 1860, and died September 22, 1883; their son Frankie Woodbury died in 1879.
All interments were made at Garden Grove Cemetery, Garden Grove IA. Also intererd at Garden Grove Cemetery is Anna Dell (Chamberlin) Woodbury, born in 1861, and died in 1944
