Biography ~ Bartlett Yancy Walker

B. T. (sic) WALKER, a native of Surrey County, North Carolina, born October 29, 1819, son of WILLIAM and CATHARINE (KIMBALL) WALKER. He was reared on a farm, and in early life became thoroughly acquainted with all the duties pertaining to agriculture. When he was fourteen years of age his parents moved to Indiana, and located near Spiceland, Henry County, where they passed the rest of their lives. He remained at home until twenty-one years of age, and then went to Knoxville, Illinois, and engaged in farming and the nursery business until the fall of 1857, when he came to Iowa, and made his first purchase of land in Decatur County, on the southeast quarter of section 7, Franklin Township. This he subsequently sold and bought the northeast quarter of the same section. He now owns 190 acres of choice land, and has one of the pleasantest homes in the township. He is one of the representative men of the township, and has served in several official relations. He takes an especial interest in educational matters, and has served several terms as member of the School Board. He was married in Illinois, to FRANCES MAXEY, a native of Virginia, daughter of ROBERT SCOTT and RIDLEY (NIXON) MAXEY. They are the parents of six children – MALINDA, CYRUS, W. H. [Washington Hanford], W. C. [William Cruso], F. ALBERT, and FRANCES R. The last named is deceased. Mr. and Mrs. WALKER are members of the Methodist Episcopal church.

NOTE: Bartlett Yancy Walker died March 19, 1912, Weiser ID. His first wife, Frances (Maxey) Walker was born April 7, 1827, Buckingham Co. VA. They were interred at Green Bay Cemetery, Clarke Co. IA.

Bartlett's 2nd wife was Melissa (Durham) Bassett Walker, the widow and 3rd wife of Elias Bassett (1804-1873). Melissa, the daughter of James and Zelinda (Wright) Durham, was born in Defiance Co. OH on April 15, 1835, and died in Mercer Co. MO on May 26, 1912. Melissa and Elias were interred at Meek Cemetery, Decatur Co. IA
