(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 609:JUDGE L. H. SALES, Woodland Township, is a native of Ontario County, New York, born in [March 28] 1819, a son of HIRAM and NANCY SAYLES. When he was three years of age his parents moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, and the year following to Miami County, Ohio, and thence, in 1834, to Defiance County, where he lived until 1849, when he came to Iowa, and lived a year in Iowa City. He then went to Washington County, and in the spring of 1856 located in Leon. he began to study of medicine in Defiance County, Ohio, and practiced several years. He served as a receiver in the United States land office at Chariton three years. In 1860 he erected the Sales House, the first hotel of any note in Leon, and was its proprietor and manager nearly twenty-five years. In 1859 he was elected county judge, and served two years. He enlisted in March, 1862, in the Seventeenth Iowa Infantry, and was appointed Second Lieutenant of Company A, but resigned after a few months, on account of failing health. He has now retired from active business life, and is living on his farm in Woodland Township.
NOTE: Judge Sales died on March 9, 1887, Leon IA. Judge Sayles married August 31, 1845, Defiance Co. OH to Mary Ann Wartenbe, born May 13, 1827, Muskingum Co. OH, and died February 12, 1910, Saint Joseph MO. Judge and Mary Ann's son, Frank Knox Sales, was born on March 20, 1853, and died December 13, 1909, Saint Joseph Mo. They were interred at Leon Cemetery, Leon IA.
