Eugene Jerome Hainer
1851 - 1929

Eugene Jerome HAINER, a Representative from Aurora, Hamilton County, Nebraska; born in Funfkirchen, Hungary, August 16 1851; immigrated to the United States with his parents, Ignace Hainer (1820 - 1900) and Eteka (Barthos) Hainer, who settled in Columbia, Mo., in 1854, and to the Hungarian colony at New Buda, Iowa, in 1861; spent his boyhood on a farm near Garden Grove, Iowa, until 1873; attended the public schools of Decatur County, Garden Grove Seminary, and Iowa Agricultural College; taught school during vacations to meet his college expenses; was graduated from the law department of Simpson Centenary College, Indianola, Iowa, in 1876; was admitted to the bar the same year and commenced practice at Aurora, Nebr., in 1877; became interested in banking [a director of five Nebraska banks which included First National Bank of Lincoln] and in a group of creameries in southern Nebraska [as director of the creameries]; elected as a Republican to the Fifty-third and Fifty-fourth Congresses (March 4, 1893-March 3, 1897) receiving 15,648 votes against 11, 486 votes for William H. Dech People's Independent candidate, 8,988 votes for Victor Vifquain, Democrat candidate, and 1,312 votes for J. P. Kettelwell, Prohibitionist candidate; unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1896 to the Fifty-fifth Congress; resumed the practice of law in Aurora and, after 1904, in Lincoln; retired in July 1928 and moved to Omaha, Nebr., where he resided until his death on March 17, 1929; interment in Wyuka Cemetery, Lincoln, Nebr.

NOTE: Julia (Blodget) Hainer was born on December 19, 1853, and died May 8, 1918, interment at Wyuka cemetery, Lincoln NE. Also interred at Wyuka Cemetery, Eugene's mother Etelka (Barthos) Hainer, born February 6, 1827, and died March 19, 1917. Eugene and Julia were the parents of two daughters, Mrs. Charles J. (Julia) O'Connor who lived in Berkeley CA, and Mrs. Leonard E. (Laura) Hurtz of Lincoln NE. Eugene's paternal ancestors were lawyers, journalists and high-ranking Hungarian government officials going back several generations.
