"Biographical and Historical Record of
Ringgold and Decatur Counties, Iowa"
(Lewis Publishing Company (1887)), p. 697:

PATRICK O'GRADY, farmer and stock-raiser, section 17, Richland Township, was born in Ireland, in 1820, son of JOHN and MARGARET O'GRADY. He came to America in 1851, and lived in New York two years, then went to Chicago, where he lived fifteen years; was on the police force three years of the time; came to Decatur County in 1867, and settled upon his present farm. He was married in Chicago, in 1867, to MARGARET MCMERE, a native of Ireland, and their children are – JOHN, MICHAEL, EDWARD, WILLIAM, PATRICK, MARY A. and STEPHEN. Mr. O'GRADY commenced with-out any means, and by his own efforts has secured a farm of 225 acres, upon which he has built a large and comfortable house, a good barn, and other out-buildings. He raises fine cattle and sheep, and has a splendid orchard. His educational advantages are good. He is a self-made man, and one whose charity never ceases. His hospitality is ever open to the needy, though his acts are seldom known except to the recipient. He and his wife are devoted members of the Catholic church, and politically he is a Democrat. Postoffice, Westerville.
