Isaac Swinney was born in Monroe County, Virginia, May1 21, 1824 and with his parents came to Decatur county, Indiana, in 1828, where he grew to young manhood. He was married to Olive Johnson May 27. 1847. In September of the same year they came to Davis county, Iowa, and located on a farm, .where they remained until 1898. They moved to. Ottumwa, where they have since made their home on Pine Street on the South Side. Mr. Swinney departed this life April 21, at 10: SO p. m. In the death of Mr. Swinney we are again reminded, that the old settlers are passing away. Fewer and fewer in number are the rugged pioneers, to whom the hardships of early settlement are but a look back to the days that are past. The deceased during his long. Life was a successful farmer and stock raiser, while his character was very strong. He was a man of convictions and feared not to express them. He has left a name to be remembered, one that cannot soon be forgotten. Mr. Swinney united with the Baptist church at Hartsville, Ind., when quite young and Mrs. Swinney joined the Baptist church at Salem, nearby.
In a few weeks after their marriage they came west bringing their religion with them, into a new country where churches were few. Together with others they soon found way to organize the Chequest Union Baptist church of which he was a member at the time of his death. The deceased and his wife were plain and unassuming but progressive people, same each day with another, year by year throughout their long married life of nearly 63 years. Of the three children born to them but two remain, James R. Swinney. of Bloomfield Iowa, and Mrs. Mary E.Briggs of St. Paul, Minn. The deceased also leaves two brothers Harvey and Gorton and two sisters, Mrs. Lucinda Patterson and Mrs.
Minerva Vorhes.
