The 1870 census indicates my ggrandfather and family lived in Surgar Grove Twnshp. He was listed as a farmer. The census reads John Dowd 44 head farmer b. Ireland 1880 Census

Mary 46 wife keeps house b. Ireland Mary Doud 54 Widow

Mary A 15 dau at home b. New Jersey Michael 22 farmer

Catherine 14 dau at home b. New Jersey John 17 farm laborer

Michael 12 son at home b. New Jersey Mag. 14 at home

Ellen 10 dau at home b. New Jersey

John 7 son at home b.Illinois

Margaret 4 dau at home b.Illinois

Michael Doud married Nettie Hyland in 1889. My Mother Alice was born in Dallas Center in 1890. At that time, Michael was working for a railroad. What happened to the farm? When did John the elder die, Mary? Did the daughters marry?
