Here is some information about the Zook Spur mining community, which was right on the border of Dallas and Polk counties (Des Moines is in Polk county, so that's where you're mostly searching, right?)

Zook Spur is now more or less a part of Madrid, which is in Boone county. I did check the Madrid centennial book for any mention of your families and found none, so I'm guessing they were relatively transient in the area, coming for the mining work and leaving when it played out, as was usually the situation.
