Marshall Family

MARSHALL, LANK, NEAL, MAULSBY

Greetings,
I am working on a book about the Marshall family during the Civil War years. Given names include Clayton L. Marshall, Calvin Marshall, Minerva Marshall (Maulsby), Rachel Marshall (Lank), Miles Marshall, and more. About one-half of the family settled in Dallas County, Iowa, near Redfield, in 1855. I live in Oregon so my initial research must be done from here. I am looking for anyone with thoughts on where I might find details on life in Dallas County in the late 1850s and early 1860s, from weather to crop prices to lifestyles. Military histories of the regiment I am interested in (39th Iowa Volunteers, Company H in particular) are readily available. If anyone knows of letters, almanacs, diaries, etc. that speak to life in the area at the time, I would be most grateful to hear from you.
Yours,
Peter Sleeth
