Mrs. Hinds Dies, Carried Pony Mail

Margaret Hinds, who carried mail on a pony in Des Moines while her husband was fighting in the Civil war, will be buried today.

Mrs. Hinds was 98 on Jun 13. She died Tuesday. Services will be at Hamilton's Funeral home at 3:30 p.m.; the burial following at Perry, Ia.

Mrs. Hinds came to Des Moines from Pennsylvania with her parents when she was 13. Her father, Powell Burkhart, owned the ground where the state-house is located now and in those days there wasn't much to Des Moines except an army fort, a blacksmith shop and a postoffice.

Margaret Hinds married at 15. After the war the Hinds moved to Perry.

Lived With Son.
For more than 20 years, Mrs. Hinds lived with her son, the late James Hinds, and her daughter-in-law, Cora Hinds, at 3058 E. Granger ave.

She had been bedfast five years, but up to the day of her death she sang hymns and oldtime songs. She had 11 children and outlived all but three.

"Mighty Proud."
One of these is Mrs. A.J. Guthrie, Murdo, S.D., who came to Des Moines for funeral. She's 74 and "mighty proud I had a mother who lived so long and was a fine Christian woman every day of her life."

Other survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Mae Miller of Des Moines, and a son, Ed Hinds of Atlanta, Ga.

Set Last Rites For Mrs. Hinds

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Hinds, 98, of 3058 Granger ave., will at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Hamilton's funeral home. Burial will be in Laurel Hill cemetery.

Mrs. Hinds, a Des Moines resident for the past 40 years, died Tuesday at her home.

She was born near Woodward, Ia., where she lived at the time of the civil war. Her husband, Peter, was a veteran of that war and enlisted in Des Moines. He died 42 years ago.

Mrs. Hinds is survived by two daughters, Mrs. May Miller, Des Moines, and Mrs. Ella Guthrie, Murdo, S.D.
