PerryServices for Gene Halling, 89, of Perry, will be 11 a.m. Tuesday, January 31, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church in Perry, IA. Burial will be in Violet Hill Cemetery. A visitation is planned at the Rowley Masonic Home Chapel from 12 to 2 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2012. Visitation will begin at Murdock Funeral Home in Perry at 3 p.m. with family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. An Elks Service will be conducted at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Gene Albert Halling was born on July 26, 1922 in Lincoln Township, rural Perry, Iowa to A.W and Myrtle (Swartz) Halling. Gene passed away January 27, 2012 at the Dallas County Hospital in Perry.
Gene attended school at Lincoln Number 1 in Lincoln Township. He graduated from Washington Township High School in 1940.
He farmed with his father until entering the U.S. Army Air Corps on November 6, 1942 at Camp Dodge. After basic training, he was assigned to the 380th Bomb Group and served in the Pacific Theater. He flew 39 missions as a tail gunner in a B24 bomber receiving three service medals, two air medals, and three bronze stars. He was honorably discharged on October 7, 1945.
Gene was united in marriage to Beverly Jean Wichael on July 30, 1949 at the Little Brown Church in the Vale at Nashua, Iowa. To this union three sons were born; Barry, Brent and Scott. Gene farmed all his life, served on the ASCS committee, was a past Exalted Ruler and Life Member of the Perry Elks Lodge #407, a member of the Moose Lodge in Perry and a long-time Lincoln Township Trustee.
Gene was a loving husband, father, grandfather, a good friend and neighbor to many in the community. Gene was preceded in death by his parents, brother Wilbert and sister-in-law, Joyce Anderson Halling. He is survived by his wife, Beverly; sons, Barry (Eileen) of Adel, IA; Brent (Brenda) of Perry, IA and Scott (Jody) of Perry, IA; six grandchildren, William, Jessica, Matthew, Cody, Levi and Wyatt Halling; four great-grandchildren and several nephews and nieces.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family or the Perry Elks Lodge #407.
