Norma Herring, 88 of Adel, died October 21, 2013 at Adel Acres Skilled Nursing facility where she had recently moved.
Norma will be missed by her children, Sue Kolander, Ken (Carma) Herring, Peggy Hutchins, ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren, brother Richard Snyder and sister Kay (Lee) Struble. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, husband Gayelord, sister Florence, and daughter Karen.
Norma was born on November 14, 1924 at Paul and Opal Snyder. Norma was a lifelong Dallas County resident. She graduated from Van Meter high school, where she enjoyed girls basketball and acting. She married Gayelord Herring in August, 1950. She and Gayelord lived on a family farm near Dexter for many years. She was a member of the Dexter Auxiliary and the Dexter Presbyterian Church.
Norma was a person of many talents. She was a caregiver, a painter, a gardener, a consummate cook who enjoyed competing at the Iowa State Fair. She was instrumental in starting the Dexter Rural Neighbors project which provides critical resources to needy families in the area. She worked as a janitor, a farm wife, laborer, church and legion auxiliary volunteer throughout her life. She also had great interest in "her" birds that were welcomed with a variety of feeders and enjoyed caring for the flowers at Adel Assisted Living. Her flowers, paintings, recipes and volunteer work touched the lives of friends, family, and others she met.
Memorial Services will be 10:30 AM Thursday, October 24 at the First Christian Church in Adel, with burial at the Dexter Cemetery. Friends may call Wednesday, October 23 at the Dexter Presbyterian Church from 6:00 until 7:50 PM, when a prayer service will begin.
