Steven Ricky McDowell was born September 23, 1950 in Webster City, Iowa to George and Beverly McDowell. At the age of five Steve was stricken with rheumatic fever and suffered from this condition for the rest of his life. He loved the outdoors but sprint car races were his greatest love. He would never miss a Saturday night race. His dream was to drive one of these cars but because of his health he knew this would never be so he undertook the hobby of remote control car racing. He raced this past year at the Iowa State Fair, taking third place. Steve also loved car mechanics and his 1969 Dodge convertible was his favorite pastime. He loved gardening and had a green thumb with all plants. He could grow the best sweet corn.

Steve was a quiet person but very thoughtful.

Steve was preceded in death by his grandparents and his aunt Evelyn Thompson. He is survived by his wife Helen of Dexter, his mother Beverly Lyons of Des Moines, an aunt Marcella Hill of McCallsburg, Iowa and an uncle Blanchard Thompson of Story City, Iowa. Also Betty, Dorr and Mary Davis of Dexter, Tom Davis of Huntington Beach, California and Eli Davis of Dumont, Colorado, as well as other relatives and friends whose lives he touched.
