Joel Bruff Hill was born near Columbus, Delaware County, Ohio, August 18, 1863. He was the fifth son of eleven children born to Henry D. and Maria Stallman Hill. Five brothers and two sisters preceded him in death. At the age of two years he came with his parents from Ohio to Grundy County, Illinois.

On August 21, 1887, he was united in marriage to Margaret Curran. To this union five children were born.

In 1908 they and their family moved to a farm near Dexter, Iowa. In 1919 they moved to Dexter where they have lived to the present time. He was baptized and received into the Presbyterian Church. They were married fifty-seven years and eleven months. Three children have preceded him in death. Gladys in infancy, Edith Payton in 1933 and Ernest in 1938. The two surviving sons, James and Lewis, both reside in Dexter.

He leaves to mourn, his wife Margaret, two sons James D. and Lewis E. and Mrs. Thelma Hill of Davenport, widow of Ernest Hill; nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; three brothers, Joseph of Rake, Iowa, Liewis of Coal City, Illinois, Thomas of New Carlisle, Indiana, and one sister, Mrs. Martha Gilchrist of Coal City, Illinois, and a host of nieces and nephews in Iowa and Illinois.
