Betty Wells, 72, died Sunday, July 10, 2005 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services were held Saturday, July 16 at the Kuhn Funeral Home in Earlham with Rev. George Thurman officiating. Private interment of cremains was in the Dexter Cemetery.

Special music included “Ave Maria,” “Soft Goodbye,” and “Angel.” Karen (Wells) Irwin gave the eulogy.

Honorary urnbearers were Bev Vanderheiden and Bev Harmon.

Betty Lou Wells, the only daughter of Paul and Nila Stewart, was born on July 27, 1932 in Iowa City.

Betty grew up at Dexter and spent a brief time in Wichita, Kan. She graduated from Dexter High School in 1950.

On Sept. 23, 1950 she married Richard Wells in Fort Dodge.

They spent their married life together in Dexter where they enjoyed gardening, fishing and camping together. Betty and Richard celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Sept. 23, 2000.

They had four children: Karen, Russell, Ronald, and Richard (Dickie).

Betty was an accomplished seamstress and loved to make quilts. She worked for a time at Drew’s Chocolates in Dexter. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and in recent years she enjoyed traveling in Iowa with her two closest friends and to Arizona, Washington, Wyoming, and Minnesota.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a step-father, Chet West; a brother, Jim Stewart; her husband, Richard, and a son, Dickie, who died in 1980 at the age of 23.

Survivors include a daughter, Karen and Bill Irwin of Oak Grove, Minn.; two sons, Russell and Theresa Wells of Stuart and Ronald Wells of Menlo, seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, one great grandchild; a brother, Eugene Stewart of Friday Harbor, Wash., aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.
