Vern Milton Algreen, 93, died of heart failure Oct. 4, 1998 at Integrated Health Services in Winterset where he had made his home for the past six years.

Funeral services were held Thursday Oct 8, at the Dexter Methodist Church with the Rev. Kathy Sides officiating. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery.

Vern Algreen was born July 3, 1905, in Fontanelle to Peter and Lilley Belle (Moyer) Algreen. He married Edith Smith on April 24, 1925 in Greenfield. They farmed south of Dexter for 45 years. In 1971, they retired and moved to Dexter. Vern owned a variety of horses, from draft horse size to Shetland ponies. He belonged to the Earlham Saddle Club and the Dexter Methodist Church.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one son, three grandsons, one sister and four brothers.

He is survived by two sons, Donald Algreen (wife Irma) of Earlham and Lonnie "Pete" Algreen (wife Mary Ann) of Martensdale; one brother, Keith Algreen of Winterset; seven grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
