Phoenix, Ariz.—Max Hoy, 71, of Phoenix, Ariz. died March 16, 1991 at Phoenix.

The son of Memphis and Roxie Hoy, he was born at Mapleton on June 28, 1919. He moved with his family to Dexter in the 1930s.

He entered the Navy in 1937 and underwent basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station. He served in the Asiatic-Germany and the Asiatic-Pacific theaters. He received three good conduct medals, the World War II Victory Medal, the American Defense Service Medal and the American Fleet Medal. He was at Pearl Harbor when it was bombed and was on a ship which was sent into the harbor to attempt to draw enemy fire away from the battleships that were at anchor.

He spent his last service years as a recruiting officer in Osceola and later in Waterloo. He retired from the Nay in 1957 and managed a parts distribution center in Des Moines until retiring and moving from Ankeny to Phoenix in 1984.

He was preceded in death by his parents; by two brothers, Ora and Clell; and by two sisters, Cleo Vanzandt and I. G. Anderson.

Survivors include his wife, Jane, and a daughter, Dawn, both of Phoenix; a son Derek of Colo.; and a granddaughter.
