Funeral services for the Rev. Kurt Daib, 59, Lutheran minister who died here late Friday of a heart attack, were conducted at Dexter Tuesday.

A familiar figure in pro sports as well as ministerial work, the Rev. Mr. Daib had been in ill health for some time.

Because of his illness, the popular Dexter pastor was forced to cancel his appearances before high school baseball coaches in a series of rules interpretation meetings around the state this spring.

Daib served as umpire-in-chief at many state high school baseball championship tournaments, the last two decades, finally being appointed as supervisor of high school umpires several years ago. He also officiated in some college games.

As a member of the National Federation of High School Athletic associations’ baseball rules committee, Daib was largely instrumental in having special rules books and interpretation rule guides published for high school coaches.

It was his contention that many baseball rules could not be observed satisfactorily by younger players, and he had the rule concerning the catcher’s box thrown out of the prep book because “half of the high school diamonds aren’t marked, anyway.”

He is survived by his widow, Ida Bergman Daib, three daughters, Mrs. James Cross of Addison, Ill.; Mrs. Jane Adkins, Denver, Colo. and Christine Daib, living at home; one son, Len Daib of Des Moines; two sisters, Margaret and Eleanor Daib of Merrill, Wis., and two brothers, the Rev. Walter C. Daib of Brooklyn, N.Y, and the Rev. Herbert Daib of Sanborn.

The Rev. George Vogel of Greenfield and Rev. G. W. Lobeck of Council Bluffs, were in charge of the funeral service at Zion Lutheran church in Dexter, starting at 2 o’clock Tuesday afternoon.

Church officers served as pallbearers, with burial at Dexter cemetery.
