Dexter—A funeral mass for Modesta (Dess) Creager, 73, of Dexter was celebrated Sept. 27, 1990 at the All Saints Church at Stuart. Mrs. Creager died of cancer on Sept. 24 at Iowa Methodist Medical Center at Des Moines. Burial was in the Dexter Cemetery.

The daughter of Herman T. and Kathrine Bissen Esser, she was born near Earling on Aug. 11, 1917. She married Robert (Bobby) Lewellen Creager on April 22, 1941. She had been employed as a maid in Des Moines, and in 1945, she and her husband purchased Creager’s Café, where she was the head cook and assistant manager for 17 years. She also worked as a cook for the Dexter Clinic Hospital from 1964 until her retirement in 1978. She was a member of the All Saints Church and its Altar and Rosary Society, a 50-year member of Catholic Daughters, a 45-year member of American Legion Auxiliary, a member of Women’s Club and exercise chairperson at McAllen Mobile Village in McAllen, Texas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, by two sisters, Viola and Virginia, and by a brother, Alexius.

Survivors include her husband, Bobby; a son, M. Sgt. Keith Creager of Fort Walton, Fla.; two daughters, Kathleen Mitchell of Ottumwa and Karen Creager of Des Moines; a sister, Marcella (Sally) Kaufmann of Earling; six brothers, Anthony (Tony) Esser and Marcus Esser, both of Woodvine, Sylvan Esser of Omaha, Neb., Cletus Esser of North English, Ivo Esser of Logan and Herman Esser Jr. of Earling; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
