Allen D. Atherton, 85, of Dexter, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2003, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services were held Friday, Oct. 24, at Calvary Assembly of God Church in Dexter. Burial was in Dexter Cemetery in Dexter.

Allen D. Atherton was born on the family farm at Dexter on Jan. 3, 1918, the son of Marguerite (Stewart) and Claude Atherton.

He was a lifelong rural Dexter resident. He graduated from Dexter High School. On May 3, 1941, he married Marie Cook in rural Dexter.

He was a farmer. He served as Union Township trustee for many years, served on the board of Dexfield Schools, and was active in farmland soil and water conservation. He was a charter member of Calvary Assembly of God Church and served on the church board for many years. He loved to restore and drive antique cars.

He is survived by his wife, Marie; three sons, Bruce of Sierra Vista, Ariz.; Mark of Iowa City and Dennis of Des Moines; two sisters, Claudia Lee Atherton of Madrid and Valory Jean Eaton of Indianola; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Kuhn Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
