Deloris (Dedo or DeeDee) as she was affectionately known was born May 29, 1924 in rural Audubon County near Exira, Iowa to Charles and Ethel (Moore) Hartzell. At a young age, the family moved from Audubon to Riverside, Iowa before making their home in Redfield in 1937. Deloris graduated from Redfield High School with the class of 1942. She was united in marriage to SSgt Byrle Spillers on April 26, 1944 in Valley Junction (West Des Moines) and together they became the proud parents of three daughters, Carol Ann, Tana Kay, and Sheila Rae. After their marriage they made their home in Redfield until 1978 when they moved to Port St. Lucie, Florida, returning to Redfield in 1991. Deloris spent her life doing what she loved most, being a homemaker and raising her family. She cherished that she was able to stay home and raise them throughout the years.
Deloris was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Women's Fellowship, Etavirp Club, 66 year member of both the Order of the Eastern Star and the American Legion Auxiliary all in Redfield. She was very active within her church, which was a source of inspiration and hope for her. Deloris was well known for her wonderful disposition and kindness to others. She enjoyed cooking, shopping with her girls, traveling with her family throughout the United States and abroad, but most of all she cherished the quality time she was able to spend with her family, which she stated "was her world", and also all the fond memories of her friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles and Ethel Harzell and one infant brother, Charles Leslie Hartzell.
Deloris leaves behind, her beloved husband of 68 years, Byrle Spillers; daughters Carol Ann (Forrest) Schnobrich of Casey, Tana Kay (James) Kirkpatrick of Des Moines, and Sheila Rae (Dr. Mark) Edwards of Port St. Lucie, Florida; grandsons, Brett (Dee Welch) Cushman of Dexter and Bryan (Jonnie Bidwell) Cushman of Des Moines; cousin, Larry Spratt (Neoma) Spratt of Sistersville, West Virginia and a host of friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
Special thanks from the family to Drs. Dan Kollmorgan and Tom Buroker for their medical care and the staff of Kavanagh House for their care and compassion during Deloris's final days.
