Dean Witmer age 74, of Perry died on Monday, November 26, 2012 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Funeral services will be held Friday, November 30, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. at First United Methodist Church in Perry. Visitation will be Thursday, November 29, 2012 from 1 to 8 p.m. with family present from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Carris Family Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Maxwell Cemetery in Maxwell, IA. Memorials may be given to the Dean Witmer Scholarship Fund or the Perry Golf and Country Club and may be left at the Funeral Home. Online condolences may be sent at www.carrisfuneralhome.com

Dean Harland Witmer was born on August 19, 1938 at Des Moines, IA to Harland Harding and Bernice Belle (Fish) Witmer. He graduated from the Maxwell, IA High School. He then went on to study at Northern Iowa University, Simpson College, and Drake University. He was united in marriage to Janet McGuire in 1960 and together they had two children; Mike and Julie. He later married Collene Hamilton on March 19, 1983 at Rochester, MN.

Dean was employed at Perry Community High School for many years as a teacher, counselor, and coach.

Dean belonged to the Perry Elks, the Masons, the First United Methodist Church, and served on the Perry School Foundation board. He was an avid sport fan, and especially loved golf as a player, coach and spectator.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Harland and Bernice Witmer and a sister, Kay Ann Witmer in infancy.

Survivors include his wife, Collene Witmer, Perry, IA, children, Mike (Michelle) Witmer of Oak Ridge, NC, Julie (Mark) Erickson, Gilbert, AZ, John (Sue) Hamilton, Eden Prairie, MN, David (Julie) Hamilton, Maple Grove, MN, and Scott (Sandi) Witmer, Lee's Summit, MO, and grandchildren, Brandon Witmer, Andrew Erickson, Collin Erickson, Tyler Hamilton, Tara Hamilton, Ian Hamilton, Marissa Hamilton, Katherine Hamilton, Grace Hamilton, Natalie Hamilton, Lucile Witmer, and Abigail Witmer.
