Jean F. Smith, 86, of Adel, Iowa, passed away February 23, 2012, at Sunny Brook Care Center in Adel. Services will be held 10:30 A.M. Saturday, March 3, 2012, at the Adel United Methodist Church. A gathering of friends and family will be held following the service at the Church. Memorial contributions may be made in Jean's name to the Animal Rescue League in Des Moines. Jean was born November 14, 1925, in rural Guthrie County, Iowa, to Merryl and Lois Taylor Melton. As a child the family lived in the Adel and Jamaica area before she moved back to Adel to live and attend school. She graduated from Adel High School with the class of 1944. She was united in marriage to Jack Smith, in 1946, and together they became the proud parents of five children. After their marriage, they lived in Colo, Iowa, where they farmed for a short time before making their home in Adel. Jean worked for Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS) office in Adel, as an Ag Ground Measurer, for 20 years before retiring. She was a member of the Women's Auxiliary, Adel United Methodist Church and several card clubs. She enjoyed dancing and roller skating.

She is preceded in death by her parents Merryl and Lois, her beloved husband, Jack, and 4 siblings, Russell, Rhea, Louis, and Joan.

Jean leaves behind to cherish her memory, her children, Kip Smith of Oklahoma, Susan Smith, Ronald Smith and Syd Smith all of Adel and Dan Smith of Oklahoma; 8 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren and 7 great-great grandchildren; two siblings, Darrell and Kenneth Melton and a host of nieces, nephews and friends all of whom will miss her greatly.
