Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
February 27, 1936

William Henry Ellis was born on a farm near Oskaloosa, Iowa, March 2, 1867. He was one of ten children born to William and Sarah Ellis. When he was three years of age, his parents moved to northeastern Nebraska in a covered wagon to the Springbank community near Allen. His boyhood days were spent with his parents in this pioneering section.

On May 22, 1892, he was united in marriage to Lucy A. Williams. There came to bless this home two boys. For nearly fourteen years they made their home in Nebraska. The spring of 1906, they moved to Iowa to the Bear Creek neighborhood. Since that time they have resided in Earlham and Bear Creek communities.

William Ellis was converted when a young man. He was a consistent Christian and gladly followed his Master throughout life. In the establishment of a Christian home, there was very early begun the custom of worship about the family altar. This was faithfully and devotedly continued unto the end of life.

He was a member of the Pastoral Committee of Springbank, Earlham and Bear Creek Friends churches. He served for years as an elder of Bear Creek Friends church. He was also a member of the Burden Bearer’s class of Bear Creek Sunday School.

Although he had been in failing health for a number of years, he was cheerful, courageous, and patient in all. It was in the evening of February 13, 1936, that William Ellis slipped away to be with his Lord. Thus his life’s day was ended at the age of 68 years, 11 months, and 11 days. By his departure he leaves in mourning his life’s companion his two sons, Eugene of Dexter, and Clay of Redfield; three grandchildren, Junior, Laurence and Betty; one sister, Anna Rush, of Lowell, Oregon, a number of nieces, nephews and other relatives and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by father, mother, six brothers and two sisters.

A life has been lived, a departure has come, but a Christian influence continues.

Funeral services were held in Bear Creek Friends Church at two o’clock Sunday afternoon, February 16, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Paul Barnett. Interment was in Bear Creek cemetery.
