Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
April 16, 1931

Theodore A. Lowry, son of W. F. and Rachael Lowry, was born in Van Meter Township, Dallas County, Iowa, on November 10, 1860. When quite young his parents moved north of De Soto to the place known as the Lowry farm and this was his home through his childhood years. He supported himself two years in his De Soto high school days by working in a drug store.

At the close of his school days he formed a business partnership with William Roberts and they conducted a mercantile business at Booneville for several years. Later this partnership was dissolved and both partners returned to De Soto where “T. A.” as he was familiarly called, soon became De Soto Postmaster. This position he held for twelve years endearing himself to all his patrons by his efficiency and loyalty to their interests. After retirement from the post office he spent a number of years working in the De Soto Savings Bank and in the Exchange Bank of De Soto.

On March 20, 1918 he was united in marriage to Estie Kahle. To T. A. earth must have become akin to Heaven when he have up the loneliness and homelessness of his bachelor life and with the sweet heart of his youth and manhood came out “to live in the house by the side of the road to be a friend of man.” This event in his life we believe to have been the most outstanding to him for before his fatal illness mastered him he had been talking and planning with his companion for their thirteenth wedding anniversary when they might have again in their home all the wedding guests of 1918 to enjoy the day with them. These years of wedded life that T. A. and wife have spent together out on the farm west of De Soto have been years of perfect happiness and joyful comradeship.

The entire life of T. A. Lowry has been a Christian life. Born in a Christian home he was baptized in infancy and in early childhood he became a member of the De Soto Methodist Church. He was at one time superintendent of the Methodist Sunday School of De Soto.

His devoted wife and his sister-in-law, Mrs. John Lowry, of Kincaide, Kansas, who were with him at the hour of his death, mourn his departure, also a step-mother and one step-sister. Two sisters, Suzanne Conkright and Ann Lowry, of Millersview, Texas, and a brother, James Lowry, of Chico, Calif. are the other members of his family that survive him.
