HALFERTY, Robert Larry, 69, of Leon, Iowa, died on Monday, September 3, 2012 in Leon under the dedicated and committed care of the Decatur County Hospital staff, after a courageous battle with cancer for the past year. Following cremation, memorial services were held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at the Loving Chapel United Methodist Church in Leon, Iowa with Pastor Rick Hawkins officiating. Arrangements were through Slade-O'Donnell Funeral Home of Leon.

Memorials may be given to the Leon Lions Club.

ROBERT LARRY HALFERTY ... Robert Larry Halferty, age 69 of Leon, Iowa, son of Robert Leroy and Maudie [Smith] Halferty, was born November 13, 1942 in Des Moines, Iowa. Larry passed peacefully on September 3, 2012 in Leon under the dedicated and committed care of the Decatur County Hospital staff. Larry fought a courageous battle with cancer for the past year. He was dearly loved and will be missed greatly by many.

Larry grew up in Des Moines. He started his career by working as a lineman for Northwestern Bell beginning in 1961, and he retired from U.S. West in 1990. Following his first retirement, Larry was employed by Kewitt as an outside plant engineer for fiber optics, working in both Iowa and New Mexico. He later worked for the State of Iowa in the same capacity until retiring. Larry, known for a very strong work ethic, enjoyed success in all phases of his career.

Larry married Betty Sue Mead on December 13, 1990 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. The sunset ceremony was in the all-grass Thorncrown Chapel. Sue was the love of Larry's life, and their years together were a wonderful family example of the depth and respect a marriage held. Larry and Sue lived many years in Clive, Iowa, moving to Leon in 2007.

Traveling with Sue, being in New Mexico and Arizona, golf, and family were the things Larry loved. He is remembered by hisfamily for his strength and tenacious spirit, his generosity, graciousness, and kindness.

Preceding Larry in death were his parents, and wives Kaaren Hannah and Jan E. Slechta.

Surviving are his wife Sue [Mead] Halferty of Leon; his children: daughter Cinda Marie [Halferty] Salinas and husband Ray of Rockwall, Texas, son Monte Halferty of Des Moines, and twins Brian J. Shurts of Des Moines and Suzanne C. Shurts of Perry, Iowa; 4 grandchildren: Zachary N. Salinas, Aubyrne S.M. Shurts, Lindsey M. Salinas, and Jake M. Salinas; sister Mary Katherine [Halferty] Hanson and husband Doug; brother John Newton Halferty; 3 nephews: Mark Hanson, Brad Halferty and wife Amy and their three children, Thomas Halferty; other relatives and many friends. ~ The Des Moines Register, Des Moines, Iowa Thurs 6 Sept 2012.
