Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
November 18, 1909

Gustave Adolph Zeliadt was born in Sweden, February 27, 1848. With members of his family about him he died in the Des Moines Methodist hospital, Nov. 12, 1909, at the age of 61 years, 8 months and 13 days.

In 1878 with a number of friends, the deceased immigrated to Des Moines, Iowa. Shortly after his marriage to Carolina Carlson in 1882, he moved to the Clover Hill vicinity four and one half miles northeast of Earlham, Iowa, where he has lived continuously.

When a young man he joined the Baptist church and was a member at the time of his death. Though not always able to attend his own church he was interested in all religious matters regardless of creeds, and, modest in manner, he stood ruggedly for truth and honesty. He reared his family in a strict Christian atmosphere, beginning each day with family worship. Two daughters who died in infancy awaited him on the other shore, and many times has he expressed his readiness to go when ever called. It seems a coincidence that as the old year was closing and the green of nature that he loved so much was ripening and fading away, with his work for the year finished and provision made for the winter, he too should close his earthly career.

The funeral services, conducted by Rev. Stribling, were held in the Hickory Grove United Brethren church on Sunday afternoon and he was laid to rest under the soothing pines in the neighborhood cemetery, located on the side of the hill that overlooks the home where he lived and labored for so long.

Two sisters, living in Sweden, and the daughters here survive him.
