Earlham Echo – Earlham, Iowa
June 18, 1953

Mary M. Hadley, daughter of Jonathan D. and Zelinda Hadley was born on a farm near Stuart, Iowa on December 3, 1874, and departed this life on June 3, 1953 at the age of 78 years and six months. She was a member of a pioneer Guthrie county family of seven children all of whom have gone to their reward except one sister, Hessie H. Story of Bellflower, California. She was a birthright member of the Society of Friends and accepted Christ as her personal Savior at an early age. Throughout her entire life she remained true to the principles of Christ as understood and practiced by Friends.

On October 18, 1900 she was united in marriage to Theodore W. Cook, who preceded her in death on March 7, 1952. To this union were born eleven children, ten of whom survive their mother. One daughter, Hazel M. Spach, passed away nineteen years ago leaving behind a daughter, Mary Lou, who made her home with her grandparents until she reached the age of maturity.

The surviving relatives are the sister, Hessie Story of Bellflower, California; and a brother-in-law, Miles C. Cook of Yates Center, Kansas. The surviving children together with their husband and wives are: Theodore M. and Mamie of St. Charles; Arnold W. and Blanche of Creston; George W. and Lorena of Des Moines; William E. and Olive of Des Moines; Charles and Vera of Orient; Joseph J. and Kathleen of Corning; Dorothy and John Zellweger of Orient; Clarence and Mildred Fender of Cypress, California; Ruth and Forrest Richard of Humeston; Esther and Gale Wolfe of Nicola, British Columbia, Canada. Besides the members of her immediate family she leaves to mourn her passing: 29 grandchildren, four great grandchildren and a host of friends.

Those who knew and loved her most will long remember her devotion to her family and her cheerful disposition. Even as the hour for her sudden departure approached she ---- the spirits of her loved ones by her calm and serene manner. Those who were near and dear to her will miss her, but we know that she has been reunited with the Loved Ones who have gone on before. We have the blessed assurance that Mother will be waiting to greet us as one by one we enter the City of the Blessed.

Final rites were held at the Earlham Friends church on June 7th, with the Rev. J. Paul Hadley in charge assisted by Rev. Charles Eble, and her mortal remains were laid to rest in the Bear Creek cemetery beside her husband.
