Winterset, Iowa
Pg 3Daniel Carman Harper was born in Montgomery county, Indiana, on the 13th day of November, 1841, and in March of 1861, with his parents, moved to Dallas county, where he has since resided.
On August 9th, 1862, he volunteered his life to the service of the Union in the Civil war, and was honorably discharged and mustered out of service in June, 1865, having faithfully and cheerfully discharged his trust.
On November 19th, 1865, he was united in marriage with Hannah Chestnutwood and immediately thereafter moved on to the farm west of De Soto, Iowa, where he spent the remaining years of life. Unto this marriage there was born one child, a daughter, Ida, who was united in marriage with P. H. Mitchell.
He died on January 7th, 1927, after but a few days illness, quietly clearing away life’s last moments in that calm peace and serenity that passeth understanding. His widow and daughter survive him. Mr. and Mrs. Mitchell for many years have lived and made their home with Mr. Harper and wife.
Mr. Harper was a highly respected, useful, patriotic, and much loved citizen of his county and state. Those who knew him will realize the loss of a patriot, a clean citizen, and a true friend.
His surviving brothers and sisters are Mary C. Mark of Earlham, Elizabeth A. Kelley of De Soto, Eliza J. Fish of Newton, Lou E. Steckman of San Diego, California, Lillie M. Miller of Des Moines, John A. Harper of Pond Creek, Oklahoma, and Harriet A. Trapp of Boulder, Colorado.
Funeral services were held in the De Soto Methodist church Sunday afternoon, the pastor, Rev. James Walls, preaching the sermon.
