Francis E. Lenocker, born April 14, 1866, in Holmes county, Ohio, died July 29, 1900, at Williamsburg, Iowa; moved with his parents to Illinois in 1867, to Iowa in 1869. After graduating from the Dexter normal, he taught in the rural schools of his own county for a number of years. Graduated at the State Normal, Cedar Falls, Ia., in 1891, receiving the degree of B. D.; finished fourth year course in 1896. In the interim he was principal of schools at Onslow, Ia., two years, and three years at Arcadia, Ia. He graduated from the State University at Iowa City in 1898. In the summer of 1898 he was sent to the Pacific coast as a member of the committee appointed by the faculty of the university to gather botanical specimens for the museum of the scientific department of said institution. He was elected principal of the Guthrie county high school July 8, 1898, in which capacity he continued until his death. In the summer of 1899 he was an instructor in the Guthrie County Institute. He was selected to act in the same capacity by Superintendent Boggs in the institute of 1900, and was also to be one of the instructors of the institute now in session at Winterset, Iowa.
Mr. Lenocker by dint of perseverance and an untiring industry worked himself to the front ranks of Iowa educators of his age. He was an excellent example of what may be achieved by an American youth. He was regarded by his associates as a thorough scholar and instructor of rare ability. He possessed the ability of the executive and administrative and had pronounced elements of leadership. A young man of rugged and positively wholesome character, his loss will be mourned and felt not only by his immediate relatives but also by the entire company of teachers and students whose lot it has been to come in touch with him.
On July 3, 1900, he was united in marriage to Miss Jessie Popham, of Williamsburg, Iowa. On July fourth they started on a wedding tour through the south, attended the National Educational association at Charleston, returning by way of Washington, D.C. While at Washington he was taken sick with malarial fever and returned to Williamsburg. The best medical aid, the constant care of loved ones were of no avail and he died after an illness of ten days.
His remains were brought to the parental home in Dexter and laid to rest in the beautiful cemetery south of town, attended by a large concourse of friends and relatives. Services were conducted by Rev. Baxter of the Dexter M.E. church assisted by Rev. McEwen of the Presbyterian church of Panora.
