STATE NEWS
A murderous assault was made upon a boy named Bates, sixteen years old, Walnut Township, Dallas County, last Sunday afternoon by three men named Carter, father and sons. Sometime ago a difficulty arose between the Carter and Bates families. On Sabbath afternoon, the three Carters went to the house of Mr. Bates during the absence of Mr. Bates and started abusing his wife. The lad above names stepped between them and his mother and told them to stop abusing his mother, heroically adding that he should defend her to the last. Two of the Carters then seized the boy, holding him down, when the other Carter stabbed him three times with a pruning knife, once in the arm, once in the side, penetrating into the lungs, and one just above the heart. The boy is fearfully injured, and it is not probable that he will recover, although he was still alive Tuesday. On Monday the Carters were arrested, and admitted to bail at $300. Tuesday morning they were rearrested, and lodged in jail at Adel. A tense excitement exist in the neighborhood. The Carter’s have a bad reputation, and have made themselves a terror to society by their lawless violence. Wm. Bates is a hardworking, responsible farmer, and is highly respected as a citizen.
