Walter Henry Hansohn – 13 September 1915 – 23 October 1998

Walter Henry Hansohn was born September 13, 1915, the son of Henry and Ida Schultz Hansohn. He died Friday, October 23, 1998 at the Crawford County Memorial Hospital in Denison at the age of eighty-three.

Walter was born on a farm in Stockholm Township, near Kiron, Iowa. He received his education in Stockholm No. 4, a rural school near his home. After completing his education, he farmed with his family until joining the U.S. Army, in August 1942. During his tour of military duty, he served his country in artillery battalions in Europe, Belgium, France, Germany and England. After receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1945, he returned to Kiron rejoining his family on the farm.

On May 4, 1947, Walter was united in marriage to Arla Ewoldt at St. John's Lutheran Church in Stockholm Township. The couple settled on the family farm and were blessed with the birth of two children.

Walter was a lifelong member of St. John's Lutheran Church. He was a devoted, loving and caring husband, father and grandfather. Through his life, he was a devoted steward of the land he loved, caring for it as he loaded and bailed hay and cleaning the farm by sticking thistles. In his leisure time, he loved to Polka dance.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and three sisters-in-law. Survivors include is wife, Arla of Kiron; two sons, Raymond and his wife, Sue of Culpepper, Virginia; Ralph and special friend, Darlene Trieweiler of Denison; four grandchildren, Chris of Culpepper, Virginia; Paul of Washington, D. C., Mark of Ft. Lewis, Washington, and Linnae of Denison; and one brother, LeRoy Hansohn of Kiron.

Funeral services were held at 2 P.M., Monday, October 26, 1998 at the St. John's Lutheran Church, Kiron, Iowa. Rev. Hilmar Hafner officiated the service and grave side rites held at the St. John's Lutheran Cemetery, Stockholm Township, Kiron. Lois Gronau provided the organ accompaniment for soloist, Marc Linman singing "Rock of Ages, Cleft for Me" and " Jesus, Lover of My Soul" and "What a Friend We Have in Jesus". Pallbearers were, Herman Kohnekamp, Steven Hansohn, Jim Steinkuehler, Ed Launderville, Allen Hansohn, Dale Ewoldt and Bob Pick. The family invited everyone in attendance at the service to join them in fellowship and lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid. The Huebner Funeral Home in Denison was in charge of arrangements.
