Funeral services for Walter Joe Hammerstrom, 79, of Arthur, will be at 2 p.m. today (Thursday) in the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur. He died Sunday, April 4, 1993, at Horn Memorial Hospital in Ida Grove.

The Rev. Robert Lundberg will officiate, with burial in the Hayes Township Cemetery south of Arthur. The Christensen Ciha Funeral Home in Ida Grove is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Hammerstrom was born to Joe E. and Mamie E. (Christensen) Hammerstrom on July 17, 1913, on a farm in Hayes Township of Ida County. He lived there until he was 6. Then his family moved to Sioux City, where he attended elementary school.

He returned to Ida County when he was 14, and his family began farming in the Blaine Township area. He attended Blaine Township No. 8 country school in Ida County. He graduated from Ida Grove High School in 1932.

He married Helen Joan Druivenga on March 24, 1950, in Arthur. A few years ago the couple moved into Arthur after farming in Blaine Township. Mrs. Hammerstrom survives.

Mr. Hammerstrom was a member of the Evangelical Free Church in Arthur.

Other survivors include: four daughters, Mrs. Ray (Deborah) Peterson of Brooklyn Center, Minn., Mrs. Larry (Joann) Dose of Ida Grove, Mrs. Peter (Carol) Goldsmith of Annapolis, Md. and Mrs. Jon (Jane) Gailey of Kent, Wash.; eight grandchildren; nine brothers-in law and sisters-in-law; and 28 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by an infant sister; a sister, Bernice; and a brother-in-law, Sam Larson.
