Glorianna Adela (Dorfler) Garrett was born on March 11, 1931, to Franklin and Adela (Schultz) Dorfler in Ricketts, Iowa. She was baptized at Hanover Lutheran Church of rural Charter Oak and confirmed at St. John's Lutheran Church in Charter Oak. Gloria attended country school and graduated from Charter Oak High School in 1949. She then went to Buena Vista College for two years to become a teacher. She taught for one year at Lake View, Iowa.
On September 20, 1953, she married Beryl Garrett at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City. The couple lived in Charter Oak for a few years and then moved to Dow City and in 1964 the couple moved to Dunlap. Gloria was a teacher at the Dow City school and also the Dunlap school. After her retirement, Gloria continued to be a substitute teacher and the couple worked at Yellowstone National Park for five summers.
Gloria was a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church; Care Auxiliary, where she held the office of treasurer; and the Crawford County Retired Teachers Association. She loved to crochet and knit baby afghans and then take these blankets to Children's Hospital. Family members also received Gloria's blankets when they got married or had babies. She also enjoyed the simple thngs in life, watch the sun set, and Sunday night dances.
Gloria died December 19, 2004, at the Dunlap Nursing and Rehab in Dunlap, Iowa attaining the age of 73 years, nine months, and eight days.
Gloria was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her husband Beryl; son Steve Garrett and his wife Deb of Charter Oak, Iowa; daughter Debbie Garrett and special friend Tim Oppold of Dunlap, Iowa; two grandchildren Alex and Melissa Garrett; sister Frances Rabe of Sioux City, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends.
Services were held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, December 22, 2004 at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Dow City, Iowa. Rev. Gordon Buchholz and Rev. Larry Lemke served as clergy. Sherry Ketelsen served as Musician for congregational hymns, ""A Mighty Fortress Is Our God"", ""Angels We Have Heard On High"" and ""How Great Thou Art"". Those serving as honorary pallbearers were Alex Garrett and Melissa Garrett. Pallbearers were John Dorfler, Randy Garrett, Brett Malone, Mark Garrett, Troy Garrett and Brad Schultz. Glorianna's final resting place is in the Dow City Cemetery in the Dow City, Iowa. Funeral arrangements handled by Fouts Funeral Home in Dunlap, Iowa.
