Edna Koeppen Kelm was born June 14, 1915, the daughter of Eskil and Alvena Samuelson Toll. She died at the Marian Health in Sioux City, Ia., Monday, July 4, 1994 at the age of seventy-nine years.
Edna was born in Huron, South Dakota, where she was baptized in Christ. At a young age, she moved with her parents to Charter Oak, Ia. Where she received her education in the Charter Oak Community Schools, and graduated from Charter Oak High School with the Class of 1933. She was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak.
On August 30, 1933, Edna was united in marriage to Louis Koeppen. The couple settled on a farm near Castana and were blessed with the birth of four daughters. While on the farm, Edna enjoyed occupying her time caring for her flower and vegetable gardens, crocheting and socializing with family and friends at dances. Christmas time was her favorite season of the year.
In 1965, the couple retired from farming and moved to Mapleton in 1966. On December 20, 1969 Louis died. On December 7, 1974, Edna was united in marriage to Louie Kelm and the couple remained in Charter Oak. Edna was a member of the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, the Clubetts, Sunshine Club, an active member of the Senior Citizens , the LLL and VOCO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Louis Koeppen and Louie Kelm; one sister, Mildred and her stepfather, Clarence Brockman.
Survivors include four daughters, Marlene Marth and her husband, Ed of Ricketts, Shirley Dunlop and her husband, Bill of Moorhead, Marge Thiel and her husband, Harry of Glendale, Ariz., Jan Yockey and her husband, Jimmie of Smithland; and one step-son, Ronald Kelm and his family of Charter Oak. Other survivors include twelve grandchildren; three step grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren; and three step great grandchildren; one sister, Esther Pithan of Longview, Wash., and other family members and friends.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 7, 1994 at the St. John Lutheran Church in Charter Oak, with Rev. L.C. Gebhardt and Vicar Tim Kersten officiating the service and graveside rites held at the Mount Hope Cemetery in Mapleton. Art Beeck provided the organ accompaniment for congregational hymns, ""Just As I Am, Without One Plea,"" ""What A Friend We Have in Jesus"", and ""Oh, That The Lord Would Guide My Ways.""
Pallbearers were Kenneth Marth, David Grindle, Kevin Grindle, Seth Johnson, Mike Marth and Joe Thiel. The family invited everyone in attendance to join them for lunch at the church, served by the Ladies Aid.
