JOHN BLUNK DIES SUDDENLY

Thought He Was Getting Well When Turn for Worse Came

The friends of John Blunt were taken by surprise Saturday morning, when the word came to them that he had taken a sudden turn in health and was gone. Mr. Blunk had been very sick the week before, but from this he was recovering nicely, when the turn came.

John Martin Blunk was born in Wesel Düren, Nord Dithmarschen, in Schleswig-Holstein, Aug. 16, 1853. He was married in 1877 to Miss Anna Moeller at Hemme. They came to America four years later and settled in Hayes township. In 1897 they moved to Paradise Township, and in 1898 to Hanover Township. They lived there until January, 1920, when they moved to Charter Oak.

In Charter Oak Mr. Blunk found a house badly in need of repairs and had it barely fixed up when he was taken sick. But Charter Oak people are grateful to him for changing an eyesore to one of the prettiest little homes in the town.

—-To Mr. and Mrs. Blunk eleven children were born —

Minnie, Mrs. H. W. Boeck, Denison

Anna, Mrs. C. Kohls, Denison

Charles Blunk, Dow City

Lizzie, who died in infancy

John, who died in 1909

Mary, Mrs. John Vogt, Denison

Dora, Mrs. Max Quandt, Charter Oak

William Blunk, Ute

Emma, Mrs. G. C. Grill, Charter Oak

George, who died in infancy

Hilda, Mrs. Henry Vogt, Denison

Funeral services were conducted by Rev Wenzel, of Schleswig, at his home in Charter Oak, and interment was made in St. Paul’s cemetery.

It is probably that Mrs. Blunk who survives him, will continue to occupy the home in town, although several of her children are asking her to go and make her home with them.

CHARTER OAK LOST RESPECTED CITIZENS

HERMAN QUANDT AND JOHN BLUNK BOTH DIED FRIDAY LAST

Burial of Mr. Quandt Took Place Sunday in Hanover, Blunk Interment Here.

Charter Oak, April 20—

It is with sincere sorrow and regret that we chronicle the death of two highly respected citizens of this city.

Herman Quandt, one of the pioneers of Crawford County, died at his home in Charter Oak last Friday, April 16. His age at the time of his death was sixty-eight years. Mr. Quandt was taken ill with obstruction of the bowels two weeks ago and went to Sioux City and entered a hospital for surgical treatment. He passed thru the operation successfully and seemed to have every promise of returning health. On Tuesday evening of the last week he came home from the hospital and rested well the first night spent in his home. On the following day complications developed that caused him to suffer untold agony until Friday morning at 12:30 he passed quietly to the great beyond.

Herman Quandt was born in Pomerania, Germany, January 5, 1856. Here he grew up and learned the blacksmith trade, which trade he followed for twelve years. In the year Miss Albertine Meseck. In 1888 the family came to America, settling in this county and for several years ran a blacksmith shop. Later he bought a farm in Hanover township. Being successful he purchased another farm near charter Oak, where he resided until he moved to Charter Oak four years ago. His wife died in 1897 and and October 20, 1907, he was married to Mrs. Rosine Mesenbrink. Deceased was beloved by all who knew him. He was classed as a good citizen and neighbor. Many years he was a member of the Lutheran congregation of Hanover and with his removal to Charter Oak he joined the Charter Oak church. He reached the age of 64 years, three months, and eleven days. He leaves to mourn his death his widow, seven sons: Max of Charter Oak, Otto of Castana, Emil of Charter Oak, Carl of Mapleton, William of Charter Oak, Herman and George, both of Charter Oak, Herman and George, both of Charter Oak, and the daughters, Mrs. John Henning of Charter Oak and Mrs. Paul Schneider of Denison; also one brother and many grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at the Lutheran church, Rev. Amstein officiating and the remains were then taken to the Hanover township cemetery and interred beside his first wife. Reve. Runge of Hanover officiated at the grave.

———

The death of John Blunk occurred at his home in the east part of the city last Friday morning, April 16th. Deceased was taken ill with gallstones two weeks ago and had been suffering intensely ever since, until relieved by death. He followed the occupation of farming until last spring when he decided to retire from work and take life easy. He purchased the Mrs. Reese residence property in the East part of town last spring and moved his home there and resided there until over taken by his fatal illness. Funeral services were held at the home on Monday afternoon at 1:30. The remains were interred in St. Paul’s Lutheran cemetery. In spite of the inclemency of the weather a large concourse of relatives and friends gathered to pay their last respects to the departed. The bereaved widow and children have the sympathy of the entire community.
