The death of Mr. Reimers of Otter Creek township on Wednesday, January 8th, calls to mind what the Germans of Crawford have accomplished in the past thirty years. Mr. Reimers was born in humble circumstances in Schleswig Holstein at Hemmie, Sept. 23, 1847. When just arriving at manhood at the age of nineteen he came to America to make his way in the land of the great opportunities. He settled in Clinton county where he remained ten years. Then attracted by the good reports from the west end of the state he bought a piece of land in section 17 Otter Creek township of Crawford county, and soon came out to improve it. He was not the only German who came out from Clinton county and won good position in our midst.

When he first came out and while he broke up his land he made his home with Hans Brodersen father of Mr. Brodersen of the Balle-Brodersen firm. Strong in body, of untiring industry, having a clear brain he set at work and in time the farm became one of the best of the many fine ones of the German settlement. He was a first class “cattle man.” He knew what, and when to buy feeders and then gave his stock such care that there was a profit in the feeding. Being a large shipper he came to the front as president of the Corn Belt Meat Producers Association of this county. Such work as he did made him prosper financially and when he died he owned some seven hundred acres of improved land. In 1876 he came to Crawford county and was married to Ottelie Stegemann in March, 1878. Together they prospered and raised a large family, nine children being born to them. Three having died, leaving five sons and one daughter, who now mourn their father’s death. These are Edward, living in Denison, J. Gustav, Albert W., Herman E., and Wm. T and Miss Minnie A., all at home. A brother, Reinhold of Pierce, Nebr., and a sister, Mrs. H. Watke, of Holstein and two step-brothers and one step-sister also survive him besides his devoted wife.

The funeral was held on Sunday, Jan. 12 at his late home in Otter Creek. The services were conducted by Rev. Amstein of the Lutheran Church of Ida county. The funeral was very largely attended nearly, two hundred carriages following the casket to the Nissen cemetery for burial. The pall bearers were his old neighbors. Mr. John Reimer was a man who left a strong impression on the people who knew him, and an upright, reliable citizen has been called to his eternal reward.
