Another one of the old settlers of this community has gone to her reward. Johanna Frederika, nee Kumtum, wife of Theodore Krauel. She departed this life on Monday of this week, March 14 at the ripe old age of 82 years and 3 days. Death resulted from a slight stroke of paralysis and the infirmities of old age.
Deceased was born March 11, 1845 in Mockow, Pommerania, Germany. On April 10, 1869 she was united in marriage with Theodore Krauel. Six years later, in 1875, she and her husband came to the United States, settling in Clayton County, Iowa. In 1881 they left Clayton County and came to Crawford County and located in Nishnabotna Township. Some twenty years ago Mr. Krauel retired from farming and with his wife moved to Denison. Last summer, however, they returned to Manilla to make their home with their youngest daughter, Mrs. George Foderberg, where she passed away under the loving care of her children after a sickbed of three weeks.
Besides her aged husband, Theodore Krauel, six children mourn her departure, two sons and four daughters, Henry Krauel of Denison, William Krauel of DeWitt, Auguste, wife of Earnest Segebart of Vail, Josephine, wife of John Ehlers of Manilla, Ida, wife of Carl Beerman, Denison, Bertha, wife of George Foderberg of Manilla. Besides these there are also 35 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren mourning her loss.
Mrs. Krauel was a member of the Lutheran Church all the days of her life. In early infancy she was baptized in the Lutheran faith and in later years renewed her baptismal vows on the day of her confirmation. She remained true to her church to the very last, departing this life in firm faith in her Savior.
She was laid to rest in Nishnabotna Cemetery on Wednesday March 16, funeral services being held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. George Foderberg and later at 2:30 PM from Trinity Lutheran Church. The pallbearers were: Henry Peterson, W. Schade, Carl Kittler, Wm. Schnoor, Wm. Boeck and John Hamann.
